I can honestly say I am hyped about it being 2D with 3D graphics! It's already looking way better than the last 4 3D MK failures IMO.

Also looks like there will be a 2v2 mode. And possibly that impale shit they had in one of the 3D MK's.

kinda looks like the same bullshit gameplay as all the recent mk's.  i don't see no running which is great to me cause i hate the run button. idk maybe just maybe i'm not seeing this right and will actually like the game. i'm crossing my fingers

I think it looks a lot better than the 3D style gameplay.  It clearly looks 2.5D, and it looks like it has assists, so it could even be a tag-style game.  It would be nice if it was more than 2players too.  2v2 with assists like mvc 4p on kaillera.

It's definitely better than any 3D game that I've seen and anything is better than that.  I'll be buying it just from looking at the trailer.  The best chars are in it, the art looks dope as shit too.  All we need are updates after the release and we could have a really good game on our hands here.

Edit: I'll be dissapointed if this isn't R rated....also there doesn't seem to be much blood in the fighting!

Definitely liking the looks of this.  What we can see so far:

-Fighting engine is 2D and appears to be based on MKDC's engine.
-There's a tag/assist system...2v2 ftw!
-2in1s are definitely back from MKDC
-Pro Moves from MKDC are possibly in?
-Unique throws again!  Fuck MKDC's throws!
-Reptile!
-Everything is just as brutal as past MKs

Considering it looks like the MKDC engine in 2D, hopefully some of the issues from said game have been fixed.

"A new Mortal Kombat is on the way. And fatalities are back.

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment just revealed that the famous fighting franchise will return on the Xbox 60 and PlayStation 3 in 2011 in a new MK that will be played in 2D.

The company says that the game will include extensive online play, a "tag-team" game option that supports up to four players in two-person teams and "the deepest story mode of any fighting game." The game will also support classic 1 vs. 1 combat. The graphics engine is said to be brand-new.

MK creator Ed Boon is overseeing the project, which is in development at the new MK-centric NetherRealm Studios in Chicago. "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding," Boon said in a press release, "mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"

Mortal Kombat was last seen in video game form in 2008's Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, a T-rated game that toned down the series' classic violence so that Superman could tangle with Sub-Zero and friends. Mortal Kombat has been in the news this week thanks to the Mortal Kombat Rebirth movie pitch trailer that we showcased here on Kotaku."

Maybe they are thinking of doing a reboot as in, this one will be more like MK1/MK2. And the next game will possibly be more like UMK3/MKT?

In any case, I like where they are heading. It seems Boon has finally realized that 2D is the only way to go!

lol. i've watched the video like 8 times now. i still want a traditional 2d digitized game but this is as good as we'll ever get i guess. so i'm getting it. lol. haven't bought an mk game in 14 years but i'll be at best buy to get this on day one.

Everything looks sweet except for that FUCKING STUPID impale ridiculousness from Deadly Alliance. If it works like it did in that game that could be a deal breaker for me, that was the most retarded shit ever. Rush to stab then run away the whole round while they bleed to death, that's going to be how online play works.
